  2. E-Discovery. How big a concern is e-discovery at your company? How is it staffed/managed? If there’s a dedicated e-discovery manager (50% of respondents do), what’s the reporting structure? What about the trend of “bringing it in house?” More than 61% of respondents say they use LPO for document review. Are you? What else are you doing to save money in discovery?
  3. Metrics and Reporting. The top 4 KPIs and the top 3 metrics tracked by respondents all related to cost (Total expense by firm, Pct of legal spend as a percentage of revenue/expense, Total cost of outcome). How are you using data to reduce legal costs?
  4. Alternative Fee Arrangements. A quarter of our respondents say that more than half of their matters are handled under AFAs, and only 5% say none are. What have you tried? What’s working? What have you learned?

David is the Sr. Director of Enterprise Information Management at CDW. In his role, he directs the information security, data management, records management, and intellectual property initiatives across the organization. He was formerly the Director of Operations for the Law Department at Aon Corporation where he used his 14+ years of broad experience in the legal, business, and technology arena to manage the nearly 200 professionals in 17 countries.

David's experience includes integrating technological initiatives with legal consulting services for corporate law departments, law firms, and insurance companies. Specifically, his focus has been on business process improvement, report creation and analysis, technology assessment and planning, organizational structure analysis, electronic invoicing, and matter management selection and implementation.

David has presented at various industry seminars and executive briefings as well as authored several articles for publication including the recently published Law Department Operations Survey where he served as both Editor and contributor.

John Barber

John Barber is the Senior Manager of Law Operations for the Amgen Inc. Law Department. John is responsible for assisting in-house counsel and support staff with day-to-day operations and developing strategies for operational efficiencies. His duties include improving the business processes of the Amgen Law Department and implementing automated tools to create efficiencies. John has led the implementation of 3 new applications for matter management, electronic billing and hold order management at Amgen. He is a lead liaison to the IT support teams for the legal area.

Prior to his current role, John provided litigation support for 11 years to the Amgen litigation groups. He supported productions for structured data collections of large databases. John's database expertise provided integral support that aided in significant litigation matters.

John earned a Bachelor's Degree from UCLA in Math-Operations Research. He has over 20 years of statistical programming experience and report development. John is a native of California from Los Angeles and currently resides in Thousand Oaks.

Rich leads the Law Department Management solution for Huron Legal. Previously, he was at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Prior to becoming a consultant, Rich directed the Business and Technology Operations for Exxon’s Law Department with responsibility for financial processes, information technology, human resources, litigation support, and the management of 150 non-attorney personnel.

Rich applies more than 25 years of financial and management experience to improving the business performance of law departments and law firms through process improvement and the use of technology. Focus areas include reducing the cost of delivering legal services by optimizing internal resources, external spend and discovery management. Also, Rich works with clients on technology strategies, business process improvement, benchmarking, and technology implementations.

Blane Erwin joined Bridgeway in 1998 and develops innovative tools to increase client satisfaction and direct the company's long-range innovation efforts. Prior to Bridgeway, Mr. Erwin was director of Business Trade and Technology Strategies for Forrester Research, Inc. where he advised senior executives at firms such as Bank of America, General Electric, Lucent, and 3M about technology's impact on long-range business strategy. He has been quoted in Business Week, Fortune, and The Wall Street Journal, and holds a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
