Justice Department launches a criminal investigation into the gulf oil disaster.

Adding Up 

The financial impact of the gulf oil spill is growing by the day:

• $20 billion: the amount set aside by BP to fund claims of economic loss

• $280 million: the estimated civil penalty, per day, for oil escaping the ill-fated well

• $62.9 billion: the total legal cost of the spill, including criminal fines, as estimated by Raymond James analyst Pavel Molchanov.

• 1,000 barrels per day: the initial estimate of the spill rate

• 60,000 barrels per day: the estimated spill rate in mid-June
