Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, introduced the m-SPAM Act of 2009 into Congress April 2. The act extends the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, which prohibits companies from sending unwanted e-mails and text messages via e-mail, otherwise known as "spam," to cell phones.
m-SPAM asks the Federal Trade Commission to consider nuisance text messages under its Telemarketing Sales Rule and to prohibit "abusive telemarketing" by way of text messages to numbers listed in the Do-Not-Call registry.
