Productivity Drain
One in four American adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Based on the 2004 U.S. Census, that translates to 57.7 million adults.

Major mental disorders cost the U.S. at least $193 billion annually in lost earnings, according to an NIMH-funded study published in May 2008 in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The study included people with mood and anxiety disorders that seriously impaired their ability to function for at least 30 days in the previous year.

"The results of this study confirm the belief that mental disorders contribute to enormous losses of productivity," says Ronald Kessler, a Harvard professor who led the study. Because the study did not include people in hospitals, prisoners or those suffering from some other mental illnesses that impact the ability to work, the estimate is conservative, he adds.
