Cloud computing company Vapor IO, based in Austin, Texas, hired Catherine Bedell as general counsel this week, and audio hosting platform SoundCloud welcomed an Amazon.com Inc. and Audible Inc. veteran to take charge of legal matters in Berlin, the company's headquarters.
Bedell is one of three major hires for Vapor IO, which works with businesses to set up data center hardware and software systems. The company also hired Matt Trifiro as chief marketing officer and David Gino as chief financial officer.
"By adding Matt, David and Catherine to our executive leadership team, we are leveraging the experience of executives who have helped companies like Salesforce, DuPont Photomasks and Rackspace grow and scale," said Vapor IO founder and chief executive officer Cole Crawford in a statement.
Bedell joins Vapor IO from Rackspace US Inc., where she most recently served as legal director. She handled corporate and commercial transactions and negotiated hosting agreements with large businesses, taking care of commercial issues and data privacy. She started her job at Rackspace in 2012 as corporate counsel and quickly succeeded through the ranks, earning two promotions in less than two years. Before joining Rackspace, she was an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
Bedell replaces former Vapor IO general counsel Andrew Smetana. Smetana, who left in December 2016 to join Vinson & Elkins, was also a Wilson Sonsini associate.
At SoundCloud, the company welcomed Merritt Farren as its new general counsel. Farren joins the company from Audible.com, where he served as chief legal officer.
Farren, who did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication, is in charge of SoundCloud's legal department. He advises on issues of data protection and privacy, copyright, music rights, commercial contracts and corporate issues.
Farren joined Amazon.com Inc. in 2006 and served as associate general counsel of digital media and new technology. He led legal matters for several product launches, including Amazon's e-book store, the Amazon Kindle e-reader device and Amazon's digital music and video businesses. He advised the company on its acquisition of Audible.com, eventually working full time for the division. Earlier in his career, Farren worked for 11 years at The Walt Disney Co., and was, for a time, the general counsel of Disneyland Resort.
Farren replaces former SoundCloud general counsel Neil Miller, who left the company this month to serve as a partner at London-based law firm JAG Shaw Baker.
