It’s tough to run a law department, but it’s even tougher to transform a law department. To transform a law department means to commit to diversity, to bring leadership to the most difficult of situations, and to have the courage to stand up for the company in the face of any adversity.
Not many individuals, even among general counsel, possess the ability to transform. That’s why InsideCounsel has committed itself to awarding those individuals that do.
On May 29, the awards committee for the 5th annual Transformative Leadership Awards announced its awards recipients for 2014, representing GCs from a number of companies, including Nationwide, Procter & Gamble, and Xerox. The awards ceremony will be held during a gala dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 at The Capital Hilton, Washington, D.C.
Among the winners, all either GC or chief legal officer of their respective organizations, are:
- Roderick Palmore Pathmaker Award: Don Liu, Xerox
- Mary Ann Hynes Pioneer Award: Deborah P. Mejoras, Procter & Gamble
- Pamela L. Carter Award: Lucy Lee Helm, Starbucks
- Anastasia D. Kelly Award: Patricia Hatler, Nationwide
- Lifetime Achievement Award: Maryanne Lavan, Lockheed Martin
- Sharing the Power Award (In-House Winner): Shelia C. Cheston, Northrop Grumman
The winners were decided by a group of general counsel from top companies and partners at top law firms. Speaking for the awards committee, DLA partner Anastasia Kelly said, “There is enormous pleasure in the selection of this elite class of lawyers because they embody the trailblazing spirit and have demonstrated true commitment to accelerate the economic empowerment of women within law departments and law firms. Their efforts have broken boundaries and have carved the path for the next generation of women general counsel.”
