Former GC of BlackBerry dials up new role with CIGI

Karima Bawa has joined The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI)

Karima Bawa

Previously chief legal officer and general counsel at BlackBerry, Karima Bawa has joined The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo, Ontario, as senior fellow. She is the first person to hold this position with CIGI’s International Law Research Program.

At CIGI, Bawa is leading a project on optimizing intellectual property developed in Canadian universities. Her work includes examining current IP regimes and recommendations on what long-term policies and supporting structures should be adopted to optimize Canadian university-driven IP. The ultimate goal is to support Canada’s competitiveness in innovation.
