Apple devices helped reshape tech landscape for legal professionals, says survey

A recent Clio survey indicates greater demand for data on the move and the distribution of Apple devices within law firms

As mobile devices continue to enable users to bridge the gap between their personal and professional lives, the BYOD (bring your own device) trend is becoming more prevalent than ever. So what is the business professional’s device of choice? In the past, BlackBerrys were more popular across companies that provided their employees with smartphones and data packages; however, now more than ever, organizations are moving towards completely Apple supported environments.

A recent TheLawyer.com report stated that results indicate greater demand for data on the move and the distribution of Apple devices within law firms. Clio, a cloud-based practice management solution, released the results from their 2013 “Apple Devices in Law Offices” survey, which signified that Apple device usage in law firms across North America shows exactly how far the influence of Cupertino extends in the legal industry. 

“For the fourth year in a row, the Apple in Law Firm survey results show the iPhone and iPad as two devices that have reshaped the legal technology landscape, with two in three law offices using either an iPhone or iPad,” said Clio CEO and co-founder Jack Newton. “Few technologies have achieved this level of ubiquity in a law firm.” 

The annual survey saw a marked increase in Apple adoption, from 56 to 66 percent, in both office Mac OS usage and iPad usage rose from 57 percent to 67 percent. Overall iPhone usage increased 12 percent to 74 percent while Android and BlackBerry both saw decreases in law firm usage compared to global adoption rates. Fifty-two percent of respondents stated they chose Apple options because the technology was more reliable and secure, with usability coming in next at 28 percent.

While smartphones certainly play a large role in keeping professionals connected, observers also continue to see significant growth in the integration of tablets in the workplace. Since the iPad debuted on the market, legal services penetration has grown from 10 percent to an impressive 67 percent within three years. A demand for a mobile workforce and an industry that never sleeps have both been driving factors in iPad adoption, as well as a proliferation of offerings and apps targeted at improving law firm productivity and efficiency, according to the report.

Clio’s survey results indicate that legal professionals are demanding greater access to data on the move and choice of devices. Furthermore, that Apple devices and cloud services continue to be the two defining characteristics driving the legal technology renaissance.
