Former USPTO acting director heads back to Crowell & Moring

Teresa Stanek Rea served as the acting director of the USPTO for nearly ten months

Teresa Stanek Rea served as the acting director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for nearly ten months, during which time she saw more work than ever with patent trolls on the rise and the job of implementing the America Invents Act (AIA), including introducing new post-grant review methods into the fold.

But now, her time with the USPTO has ended with her resignation on Nov. 21, and Rea’s next step looks to be a jump back into the world of private practice.

Crowell & Moring has announced that Rea has returned to the practice as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. She previously worked for the firm before being named deputy director of the USPTO in 2011 under then-director (and now-InsideCounsel columnist) David J. Kappos.

"Terry's experience and record of success will be enormously beneficial to our clients, whose needs cover the spectrum of IP issues - from litigation and counseling to global trade concerns... She personifies excellence, and we are proud to welcome her back to our team,” said Mark Supko, chair of Crowell & Moring's Intellectual Property Group, in a statement.

In addition to her role as Crowell & Moring, Rea will also serve as a director with C&M International, Ltd. (CMI), the international trade and investment consulting firm affiliated with Crowell & Moring. In her two positions, the firm says Rea will focus on global IP policies and strategies, patent enforcement and post-grant administrative proceedings, among other aspects of IP law.

“I am thrilled to return to the Crowell & Moring family because I value the unique mix of substantive expertise, litigation prowess, and regulatory experience,” said Rea. “I am excited about reconnecting with my clients and my colleagues.”
