Planet Fitness sued for woman’s death

Parents suing fitness chain after 22-year-old daughter collapsed and died

The parents of a 22-year-old woman are suing Planet Fitness for her death.

Emily Hamlin collapsed in the women’s locker room of the Bay Shore, New York, Planet Fitness in February 2012. Another gym member, Stephanie Dick, alerted Sean Higgins, a male Planet Fitness employee that Hamlin had collapsed. According to Dick’s affidavit, Higgins was “scared and confused” about what to do and wouldn’t go into the women’s locker room. Video surveillance shows that he waited four and a half minutes before calling 911. Police arrived almost 20 minutes after Hamlin collapsed, and they pronounced her dead at the scene after a “sudden cardiac arrest.”

Hamlin’s parents are now suing Planet Fitness as well as Higgins, claiming the gym failed to provide an automated external defibrillator and that Higgins’ inaction caused their daughter’s death. In a letter to the Hamlins’ lawyer, Planet Fitness claimed it wasn’t liable for their daughter’s death.

In a statement to the Huffington Post, Planet Fitness said “the safety of our members is extremely important to us.”
