Charting some of the most recent GC and in-house appointments

GC Appointments

Lewis Steverson joined the glass and ceramics maker Corning Inc. as senior vice president and general counsel. Steverson previously spent 18 years at Motorola Inc. and Motorola Solutions Inc., where he held titles including division counsel, senior counsel and corporate vice president. Since January 2011, he has served as general counsel of Motorola Solutions.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. appointed former U.S. Treasury Official Darius Kingsley co-general counsel of mortgage banking. Kingsley most recently served as the chief of the Treasury’s Homeownership Preservation Office, where he previously was deputy chief. While at the Treasury, he also spent two years as senior counsel for the Office of Financial Stability. He will share his GC duties with Denise DesRosiers, JPMorgan’s deputy general counsel of mortgage banking.

Lancope Inc., a provider of network visibility and security intelligence, named Jim Ulam general counsel and corporate secretary. Ulam joins the company from electronics power protection provider Innovolt, where he was general counsel. He has also occupied the GC spot at SecureWorks and VeriSign.

Gregory Goeckner was named chief operating officer and general counsel of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Goeckner has years of experience in the entertainment industry, having previously served as executive vice president and general counsel of the Motion Picture Association of America. His prior work experience also includes a stint as special counsel at O’Melveny & Myers, where his clients included several major film studios.

The Legal Services Corporation (LSC), a non-profit that provides civil legal aid to low-income Americans, hired Ron Flagg as vice president for legal affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary. Flagg previously spent 31 years at Sidley Austin, 27 of those as a partner. At Sidley, he chaired the firm’s Committee on Pro Bono and Public Interest Law.

Biopharmaceutical company Trius Therapeutics Inc. appointed Matthew Onaitis as general counsel and secretary. Onaitis previously was senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Somaxon Pharmaceuticals Inc. His has also held in-house positions at Biogen Idec Inc. and Elan Corp.

Brian Farley is now senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Allscripts. Farley previously spent nearly eight years at Motorola Inc. and Motorola Mobility, most recently as general counsel of Motorola Mobility’s home business. He has also served in-house at companies including Level 3 Communications and Rhythms NetConnections.

President Barack Obama re-nominated Lafe Solomon for another four-year term as general counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Solomon has served as the agency’s acting general counsel since June 2010, but has never been confirmed by the Senate. He joined the NLRB in 1972 as a field examiner and has worked for 10 board members in the ensuing years.
