In-house counsel social media use reaches an all-time high

2013 In-House Counsel New Media Engagement Survey reports mainstreaming of social media among in-house lawyers

The results of the 2013 In-House Counsel New Media Engagement Survey are in!

According to the survey—which the strategic communications firm Greentarget, Inside Counsel and the legal consulting firm Zeughauser Group conducted—social media use among in-house counsel has reached an all-time high, with 73 percent of respondents saying they use social media tools. The 2013 survey, which is the third edition, culled data from 379 GCs, chief legal officers, deputy/assistant GCs and other in-house counsel.

Findings point to the mainstreaming of social media use, with particular emphasis on blogs, LinkedIn and Wikipedia. More than half of respondents said the quality of law firm blogs influences their hiring decisions. More than two-thirds of respondents said they had used LinkedIn for professional reasons during the past day or week. And 65 percent of respondents said they had turned to Wikipedia to conduct company and industry research.

Additionally, consumption of media on the go is becoming increasingly popular among the in-house bar as they continue to embrace smartphones, tablets and mobile apps. Last year, 42 percent of survey respondents said they read general business media on their smartphones; that number jumped to 53 percent this year.
