The Associate Press (AP) appears to be the victor in a suit it filed against a news aggregator.
The AP had sued Meltwater News Service in 2012, claiming the news aggregating company was publishing AP articles without paying its licensing fee. The AP said Meltwater is a competitor, and its practices amounted to copyright infringement.
Yesterday, in New York, U.S. District Court Judge Denise Cote decided in favor of the AP before a trial when she granted the AP summary judgment. According to the court filing, she had one exception in her ruling, but because the full decision has not yet been released, the exception was not explained.
"This ruling makes it crystal clear that Meltwater wrongly used news content from AP to create its own content, while paying none of the costs associated with creating original news content," AP CEO Gary Pruitt said in a statement yesterday.
