Ogletree Deakins, McDermott Will & Emery strengthen practice groups

McDermott Will & Emery grows healthcare practice, Ogletree Deakins hires former chair of National Mediation Board

Two U.S. law firms announced new hires recently. McDermott Will & Emery has added eight new members to its healthcare team, one of the largest in the country, and Ogletree Deakins has hired a new head for its airline and railway employment practice group—former National Mediation Board chairwoman Elizabeth Dougherty.

After McDermott’s new hires, the healthcare team is up to about 90 lawyers. The backup was necessary to take on the extra work the firm has been facing because of the Affordable Care Act, Stephen Bernstein, head of the health industry advisory practice group, told Thomson Reuters.

At Ogletree, the firm is celebrating the "instant credibility in the airline and railway industries” brought by Dougherty, as managing shareholder Melissa Bailey told Thomson Reuters. Dougherty served on the National Mediation Board for six years and was outspoken against a proposed rule change that allowed the majority of voters, rather than the majority of a work group, to decide the outcomes of union elections.
