8 noteworthy in-house career moves

Charting some of the most recent GC and in-house appointments

GC Appointments

Edward Lazarus is now general counsel of the Tribune Co. From 2009 to February 2012, Lazarus served as chief of staff at the Federal Communications Commission, where he oversaw policy development. Lazarus previously was a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld—where he chaired the firm’s national litigation steering committee—and a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles.

 

 

Chrysler Group named Marjorie Loeb senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. Loeb previously spent two years as an assistant general counsel for the auto company. Before joining Chrysler, she was assistant general counsel and secretary for corporate securities at Delphi Automotive Systems and a principal at the law firm of Miro Weiner & Kramer. She replaces outgoing GC Holly Leese, who is retiring after 33 years with the company.


Anne Troutman was appointed general counsel of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. Troutman joined the lab in March 2010 as deputy general counsel. Her prior work experience includes stints at General Electric Co., Arthur D. Little and the Battelle Memorial Institute.

 

Independent futures brokerage R.J. O’Brien & Associates promoted Melissa Andrews to general counsel. Andrews has served as the company’s associate general counsel since late 2010 and also sits on the Futures Industry Association’s Law & Compliance Division Executive Committee. She previously was an associate at Hogan Lovells and SNR Denton.

 

Diversified Search, an executive search firm, hired Anthony Frick as vice president and general counsel. Frick most recently worked at Dechert, where his practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, corporate finance, and public company reporting and governance issues. He previously was a legal clerk for the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on House Administration.


Kristy Berner is now senior vice president and general counsel of First Niagara Financial Group Inc. Berner joined the bank in 2010 as assistant general counsel. Before that, she worked in the corporate and securities practice group at Hodgson Russ.

Law Firm News

Daniel Goelzer joined Baker & McKenzie as a partner in the firm’s global corporate, securities and banking compliance practices. From 1983 to 1990, Goelzer was general counsel of the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he was appointed a founding member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, which oversees the auditors of public companies. He also was a partner at Baker & McKenzie from 1990 to 2002.

 

Mayer Brown hired Mark Leeds as a partner in its tax transactions and consulting practice. Leeds most recently was a shareholder in the New York office of Greenberg Traurig. Before entering private practice, Leeds was a managing director and senior tax counselor at Deutsche Bank AG and the general counsel of credit derivative company CFSI.
