GC Appointments
James Chosy was named executive vice president and general counsel of U.S. Bancorp, effective March 1, 2013. Chosy currently is the general counsel and secretary of Piper Jaffray Companies, an investment bank and asset management firm. Prior to his 11-year-stint at Piper Jaffray, he served as U.S. Bancorp’s associate general counsel.
MetLife Inc. hired Ricardo Anzaldua as general counsel. Anzaldua previously spent five years at The Hartford Financial Services Group, where he most recently was associate general counsel and senior vice president. His prior work experience also includes a stint as a corporate partner at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton.
Ann Colussi Dee was appointed senior vice president and general counsel of Duke Realty, a nationwide real estate investment trust. Dee joined the company in 1996 as a corporate attorney and has since held titles including senior attorney, assistant vice president and deputy general counsel.
Gail Norris was appointed vice president and general counsel of the University of Rochester, effective Jan. 1. Norris has worked at the university since 2005, at various times serving as senior legal counsel, vice provost of technology transfer and director of the College Office of Technology Transfer. She previously held the general counsel spot at biopharmaceutical firm Celltech Americas.
Lloyds Banking Group hired Andrew Whittaker as group general counsel. Whittaker previously spent more than 12 years as general counsel of the Financial Services Authority, the U.K.’s financial regulator. He will start his new job in the second quarter of 2013.
George Ng joined BioDelivery Sciences International, a specialty pharmaceutical company, as senior vice president and general counsel. Ng has served in senior management positions at several biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Alpharma Inc. He most recently worked in private practice as a partner at Snell & Wilmer and, previously, as a partner and co-chair of the life sciences practice group at Gordon & Rees.
Other In-House Moves
Jeh Johnson, general counsel of the Department of Defense (DOD), will step down from his post at the end of this year. Johnson joined the DOD in January 2009, following the inauguration of President Barack Obama. During his tenure, the agency repealed its long-standing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy and carried out the mission that killed Osama bin Laden.
Madeleine Johnson, general counsel and vice president of Southwest Airlines, announced that on Feb. 1, 2013, she will retire after five years with the airline. Johnson began her legal career in private practice, before joining the public sector as a lawyer for the city of Dallas and as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas.
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission General Counsel Mark Cahn will leave the agency for the private sector at the end of the year. Cahn ascended to the GC spot in February 2011, after two years as the agency’s deputy general counsel. During his tenure, he helped to establish a whistleblower program and provided advice on Dodd-Frank rulemaking.
Greg Cornett was named associate general counsel at Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities (LKE). Cornett came to the utilities company in 2007 from Stoll Keenon Ogden, where he was a senior corporate attorney. In his new role, he will oversee the company’s most significant litigation and natural gas regulatory matters, and help with strategic planning.
