Sony’s law department director honored with National LGBT Bar Association’s Out & Proud Corporate Counsel Award

Tristan Higgins started the company’s LGBT resource group

Tristan Higgins, director of Sony Electronics Inc.’s law department is this year’s recipient of the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Bar Association’s Out & Proud Corporate Counsel Award. And she has a lot to be proud of.

Higgins co-founded the LGBT resource group at Sony, and also got the company involved with the San Diego Pride Parade, which it has participated in for the past three years. She’s the co-chair of the San Diego County Bar Association’s Business and Corporate Law Section, which resulted in Sony partnering with the association’s Diversity Fellowship Program. Through this program, first-year law students have the opportunity to learn from corporate legal departments.

“Tristan Higgins’ diversity advocacy is unparalleled,” LGBT Bar Executive Director D’Arcy Kemnitz said in a statement. “She has promoted LGBT inclusion throughout her career by actively seeking out opportunities to make changes for the better in her workplaces.”

The LGBT Bar Association isn’t the only organization that has recognized Higgins’ devotion to diversity. The nonprofit LGBT educational organization and film production company POWER UP recently honored Higgins with a 2012 Amazing Gay Women & Men in Showbiz award.
