9 noteworthy in-house career moves

Charting some of the most recent GC and in-house appointments

GC Appointments

Staples named Michael Williams senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, effective Nov. 7. Williams most recently was executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Sony Electronics Inc. His prior work experience also includes stints as a partner at Heller Ehrman and Andrews Kurth.


Thomas Moriarty was named executive vice president and general counsel of CVS Caremark. Moriarity comes to the company from Celgene Corp., where he was general counsel and a member of the company’s management committee. He also held the GC spot at Medco Health Solutions Inc., prior to which he worked in Merck & Co.’s Office of General Counsel.


Bradley Lerman joined Fannie Mae as general counsel, effective Oct. 1. Lerman previously was chief litigation counsel, senior vice president and associate general counsel at Pfizer Inc. Before joining Pfizer, Lerman was a partner and co-chair of Winston & Strawn’s white collar defense practice group. He replaces Judith Dunn, who has served as interim general counsel since former GC Timothy Mayopoulos was promoted to CEO of the agency in June.

 

Chesapeake Energy Corp. appointed James Webb as senior vice president and general counsel. He previously spent 17 years in law firm practice at McAfee & Taft in Oklahoma City. Webb, who has served as chief legal counsel on a contract basis for the past four months, succeeds Henry Hood, who will now oversee the company’s land and regulatory departments.

 

The University of Kentucky hired William Thro as general counsel. Thro most recently served as general counsel at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. Between 1997 and 2008, he was assistant attorney general and solicitor general for three Virginia attorneys general. His experience in higher education includes stints as chief counsel for Norfolk State University and litigation counsel for Colorado State University.


Kirkland Hicks was promoted to general counsel of Towers Watson. Hicks has been with the professional services company for 12 years, most recently serving as managing counsel, commercial, for the Americas region. He also is the chair of Towers Watson’s Diversity and Inclusion Council for the Americas.

 

The Silk Companies, a family of companies providing insurance, settlement and real estate services, named Les Kramsky executive vice president and general counsel. Kramsky previously held the general counsel spot at several other companies, including The Money Store, Paramount Properties and Consumers Title Agency. He also runs his own law firm specializing in real estate.


Mary Belan Doggett joined San Antonio-based Propel Financial Services as general counsel. She comes to the company from the law firm of Harrison Doggett & Duncan, where she worked with large lien transferees and the Texas Property Tax Lienholders Association.

Law Firm News

Sharon Davison joined Seward & Kissell as counsel in the firm’s New York office. Davison previously was the general counsel and chief compliance officer of Libertas Partners, a fixed income trading and research broker-dealer. Her prior work experience also includes a stint as a trial counsel in the enforcement division of the New York Stock Exchange
