Apple seeks to ban eight Samsung smartphones

Company wants to stop sales of various Galaxy and Droid devices

Just three days after Apple Inc. beat Samsung Electronics Co. in a high-profile patent case, the famed California iPhone maker wasted no time in moving to block the sale of its South Korean rival’s infringing products.

On Friday, a jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages after determining that 28 Samsung smartphones and tablets infringed six of Apple’s patents for the iPhone and iPad. And yesterday, Apple submitted a filing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in which it seeks a preliminary injunction against eight Samsung products, including some of the company’s Galaxy and Droid smartphones. The eight devices present “immediate, ongoing irreparable harm” to Apple, according to the filing.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Judge Lucy Koh, who oversaw the Apple-Samsung case, is likely to grant Apple’s request because she issued a preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 before the trial even started. A hearing regarding the injunctions is scheduled for Sept. 20.

Meanwhile, Samsung says it plans to try to overturn Friday’s verdict.
