Chicago woman lawyer elected president of the ABA

Laurel Bellows wants to make the association “more relevant”

Chicago attorney Laurel Bellows will be leading lawyers into the future this year. On Tuesday, the American Bar Association (ABA) named Bellows president for a one-year term, and she says her goal is to help make the organization “more relevant.”

To do this, Bellows intends to focus on promoting gender equality, advancing national cybersecurity and abolishing human trafficking. She has already created ABA task forces specifically for human trafficking and cybersecurity issues, saying many governments, businesses and law firms are unprepared for “cyberwarfare.”

Bellows and her husband, Joel Bellows, run their own law firm, The Bellows Law Group, in Chicago. She has expertise in workplace disputes, employment contracts, severance agreements and executive compensation.
