Notable moves in the corporate legal world

GC Appointments

Sara Lee Corp. appointed Kent Magill as general counsel and corporate secretary of its Hillshire Brands Co. division. Magill comes to the company from the corporate finance division of Stinson Morrison Hecker. His prior work experience also includes his 12-year tenure at Hostess Brands Inc., where he served as general counsel, executive VP and corporate secretary.

Roya Behnia joined Pall Corp., a filtration and purification company, as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. Behnia brings more than 20 years of legal experience to the position, most recently serving as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Rewards Network Inc. 

Gigamon, a provider of traffic visibility solutions, hired Paul Shinn as general counsel. Shinn previously served as vice president and associate general counsel of Hewlett-Packard’s enterprise group, and also was senior counsel at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

The Pennsylvania State University hired Stephen Dunham as its vice president and general counsel. Dunham most recently spent seven years as vice president and general counsel of Johns Hopkins University. He replaces former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Baldwin, who resigned from the GC post in January.

Frank Jimenez joined Bunge Limited, a global agribusiness and food company, as general counsel, secretary and managing director of government affairs. He comes to the company from Xylem Inc., where he was senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. Jimenez also has held posts at various federal agencies, notably serving as general counsel of the U.S. Department of the Navy from 2006 to 2009.

Raven Industries Inc. hired former U.S. Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin as its inaugural general counsel and vice president – corporate development, effective Sept. 1. Sandlin comes to the company from Olsson Frank Weeda Terman Matz, where her areas of practice included agriculture, energy and food safety. She also served as a representative for South Dakota’s at-large congressional district from 2004 to 2011.

Legal outsourcing provider Clutch Group named Brian Flack general counsel and vice president of client services. Flack joins the company from CPA Global, where he was the senior counsel and global practice head of the litigation and investigations practice. Flack also worked in whitecollar criminal defense as a partner in the Venable’s Washington, D.C., office.

Ralph Midkiff joined oil and gas exploration company Endeavour International Corp. as senior vice president and general counsel. Midkiff previously was a shareholder at Chamberlain Hrdlicka. He also was a founding partner of Zummo & Midkiff and a partner at Clements, O’Neill, Pierce, Wilson & Fulkerson from 1993 to 2004.

Tela Innovations Inc. appointed Liz Stewart as vice president and general counsel. Stewart’s prior in-house positions include a posting as assistant general counsel of Artisan Components Inc. and a stint as corporate counsel at NEC Electronics Inc. She also was a member of Cooley’s technology transactions group.


Other In-House Moves

Go Daddy Operating Co.’s inaugural general counsel Christine Jones announced her retirement after 10 years with the company. During her tenure, Jones regularly represented the domain name registrar at congressional proceedings, notably during last year’s hearings on the Stop Online Piracy Act. Before going in-house, Jones worked in private practice and at the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

Austin Schlick, general counsel of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), announced his retirement. In his nearly three-year tenure with the FCC, Schlick oversaw the enactment of dataroaming agreements for wireless carriers and the reformation of the Universal Service Fund. Current deputy general counsel Sean Lev will take over the spot.

Scott Packman, general counsel of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM), also will assume the titles of senior executive vice president and secretary. Packman joined MGM in 2002 and has served as general counsel since 2005. His prior work experience includes stints at Rogers & Wells and at Creative Planet Inc., where he was general counsel, EVP of business and legal affairs and corporate secretary.
