Leadership workshop grooms women for the GC role

InsideCounsel will host a seminar on the West Coast for women in corporate legal departments

InsideCounsel, in conjunction with the California Minority Counsel Program, is sponsoring the Project 5/165 Leadership Development Workshop on June 4 in San Francisco. Project 5/165 is dedicated to increasing the number of women general counsel in the Fortune 500 (sign up to receive monthly updates from Project 5/165 here), and this workshop is designed to help groom women in corporate legal departments to become the next generation of general counsel.

The half-day workshop--which is by invite-only--will feature a lunch panel discussion with Michelle Banks, EVP, GC, corporate secretary and chief compliance officer of Gap Inc., and Michele Coleman Mayes, EVP, GC and chief legal officer of Allstate Insurance Co. There will be breakout discussions about the skills it takes to become a GC, and case studies on how to deal with difficult male superiors. Executive search firm Korn/Ferry International also will attend the workshop, providing an assessment tool that will help each attendee determine where her skills lie and how they measure up to what Fortune 500 CEOs look for from their GCs.

In addition to being a valuable resource for women lawyers looking to climb the ladder, this workshop plays perfectly into Project 5/165’s goal. “[We are trying] to help expand the number of women who are available to be on the short list to become general counsel in the Fortune 500,” says Lloyd Johnson, one of the project’s co-founders.
