Survey reveals widespread adoption of electronic redaction

However, many users combine software with manual redaction

At the LegalTech New York 2012 event on Monday, Informative Graphics Corporation (IGC) announced the results of its Redaction Survey, which took stock of the use of and attitude toward electronic redaction software. Almost 65 percent of the survey’s respondents were from law firms, and 11 percent worked for corporations. Here are some of the survey’s key findings:

  • 25 percent of participants still do manual redaction, with markers, wax pencils or redaction tape
  • 32 percent of respondents redact electronically
  • 38 percent use a combination of manual and software-based redaction
  • 27 percent of participants say their companies have not invested in tools for electronic redaction
  • 86 percent of respondents who use electronic tools say they prefer redaction software for its professional look
  • 80 percent of the software users say they prefer it because it saves them time
