Bloomberg blows out its legal department

Media company hires five partners from its primary outside counsel, Willkie Farr & Gallagher

With the oracles currently divining that the in-house job market is trending upward, the prognostication proved true for a group of partners at Willkie Farr & Gallagher last week.

Bloomberg announced last week that it hired five partners from the law firm. The attorneys, Dick DeScherer, Dan Grossman, David Levine, Carol Mascera and Sarah Osborn, will join Bloomberg’s legal department on a full-time basis effective Jan. 1, 2012.

The media company named DeScherer its chief legal officer. He has served on Bloomberg’s board of directors more than 25 years, and will continue in the role along with his new position.

“Dick DeScherer has been a vital partner to Bloomberg for several decades and we’re thrilled to welcome him as the Chief Legal Officer of the company. We are also looking forward to the addition of his talented colleagues from Willkie Farr & Gallagher and integrating them into our existing internal legal team,” Bloomberg Chairman Peter Grauer said in a statement.

Bloomberg’s CEO Daniel Doctoroff added that the company will greatly benefit from the beefed-up legal team as it continues exploring global growth opportunities.

The media company has retained Willkie Farr & Gallagher as its primary outside counsel since 1987—a position it will keep going forward.
