Faegre & Benson and Baker & Daniels to unite

Move demonstrates rise in consolidation among law firms

Faegre & Benson and Baker & Daniels announced yesterday their plan to join together in January.

The two firms will merge starting Jan. 1, 2012, and will operate under the name Faegre Baker Daniels. The new enterprise will include about 450 lawyers from Faegre & Benson, based in Minneapolis, and about 320 lawyers from Indianapolis-based Baker & Daniels.

Forty-five consultants also will join the new firm. Andrew Humphrey, currently the managing partner at Faegre & Benson, will serve as managing partner. Tom Froehle, who currently is chair and chief executive partner at Baker & Daniels, will be chief operating partner of the new firm.

Through the merger, the two firms aim to focus their concentration in health care operations, with Baker & Daniels’ previous relationship with Eli Lilly and Co., Zimmer Inc. and WellPoint Inc., and Faegre & Benson’s ties with United HealthCare Services Inc.

The firm will operate out of 12 locations, with nine in the U.S.—largely the Midwest—and the remaining three in London, Beijing and Shanghai. The firms project their collective revenue to bring an estimated $409 million.
