Judge puts the brakes on Alabama’s immigration law

Federal judge needs more time to contemplate challenges to the strict law

An Alabama federal judge has temporarily blocked the state’s new immigration law, which is one of the strictest immigration reforms in the country.

The Department of Justice, civil rights groups and church leaders filed lawsuits challenging the Alabama law, which makes it illegal to be in the state without valid immigration documentation and also allows state police to arrest anyone they think could be an illegal immigrant.
