Most businesses use social media, many don’t have policies

Proskauer survey finds half of businesses don’t have appropriate policies in place

According to a recent survey by law firm Proskauer, 76 percent of companies use social media for business purposes, but almost 50 percent of businesses do not have social media networking policies.

The firm’s International Labor & Employment Group conducted the survey of more than 120 multinational employers. It also revealed that 43 percent of employers surveyed reported their employees had misused social media, 29 percent block employees’ access to social media sites and 27 percent monitor employees’ use of social media sites.

“In order to harness the benefits and minimize the risks of social networks, employers need to set distinct and specific policies and practices for their use,” Betsy Plevan, co-head of Proskauer’s International Labor & Employment Group, said in a firm press release about the survey. “Relying on employees to exercise good judgment is simply not enough.”
