Exxon Mobil Settles State Suit on Newtown Creek Cleanup

Exxon Mobil has agreed to pay $25 million and commit to a more thorough cleanup of its huge oil spills along Newtown Creek and a faster timetable for the process, according to a settlement announced on Wednesday by Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo.

Of the $25 million, $19.5 million will go to projects, like parks, that benefit the environment -- the largest single payment for such a purpose in New York State history, state environmental officials said.
