Smyrna, Ga.-based gun shop Adventure Outdoors has a problem with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The family owned hunting supply business filed suit against Bloomberg July 20, alleging he defamed the company when he named it in his recent lawsuit against 15 gun retailers. Former Congressman Bob Barr represents Adventure Outdoors in the suit.
Bloomberg filed suit in May against 15 gun sellers in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of N.Y., alleging the companies sold the firearms in violation of federal law. Publicly labeling the companies "rogue gun dealers," Bloomberg said that a private investigation revealed the stores' loose sales policies resulted in out-of-state firearms illegally infiltrating New York City streets.
"These gun dealers are the worst of the worst," said New York Criminal Justice Coordinator John Feinblatt in a May statement. "They represent a small group of immoral and irresponsible dealers who are knowingly breaking the law and causing irreparable harm to innocent New Yorkers. When it comes to this group of bad apples, we will be relentless."
In addition to its defamation claims, Adventure alleges Bloomberg used illegal tactics in his investigations of the gun dealers, violating Georgia law. In a press release, Barr expressed his confidence in a successful outcome for the company and called Mayor Bloomberg's actions "careless, willful and clearly illegal."
